The house, now a popular place of pilgrimage for Christians and Muslims, has received official permission from the Vatican, and Christians hold a commemoration ceremony every year on August 15. The last form of the huge Temple of Artemis, several times rebuilt, dates from the 3rd century. to. C. and is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The ruins of ancient Sart (Sardes), once the capital of the Lydian kingdom of Croesus, stretch along the banks of the Sart Çayi (Pactole River). The Temple of Artemis and a restored gym testify to the city's past splendor, as does the important synagogue from the 4th century BC. C., later rebuilt in the third century AD. of C.
